TIPS, TRICKS & FAQ

How long will my Spray Tan last?

A Spray Tan will last anywhere from 5-10 days, on average. The amount of physical activity, after care, and proper preparation for the tan are all factors of how many days one can expect their tan to last.

When should I get sprayed before my event?

We recommend anywhere from 1-3 days before your event.  Getting sprayed the day of your event is not ideal unless you get sprayed in our rapid solution, although your spray tan will still take several hours to develop.

If you are getting sprayed for an important occasion, we recommend that you get a trial spray tan at least 2 weeks before your event.

What should I wear during my spray tan?

First and foremost, we want you to feel comfortable. So we let you decide what you are most comfortable in. If you do not want strap lines, we recommend that you go topless.

What If I Have Very Fair Skin?

Our solution will react naturally with each specific skin tone. The Spray Tan Bar airbrush technicians will custom blend a formulation specific to each client's natural base color. However, if it is your first time tanning, or you have an extremely fair complexion, we suggest choosing a lighter tone to ensure satisfaction.

DHA & The FDA

The active ingredient in self tanning products is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA has been used in cosmetic preparations for almost 30 years and was listed with the FDA in 1973. It is declared safe and suitable for use in cosmetics and used to color the skin. DHA is derived from glycerin (vegetable origin) which is a commonly used cosmetic and food ingredient. DHA is not absorbed into the body and poses no possibility of toxicity.

How Do I Prepare For My Spray Tan?

  1. Start hydrating your skin several days before your spray tan. Make sure you are moisturizing daily for several days prior to your appointment and drinking lots of water.

  2. Shower, shave and exfoliate at least 8 hours prior to your appointment.
Showering right before your appointment is not ideal. If you must shower close to your appointment time, please use cool water and no product.

  3. If you have recently had a spray tan or used a sunless product, make sure you completely remove any old tan from your skin before coming in for your appointment.  You NEVER want to layer a sunless tan.

  4. Do not apply any lotion to your skin after your last shower before your appointment.  If you have dry skin, we recommend that you purchase our sunless prep gel, which can be applied before your spray tan.  Dry or oily skin can alter the color and longevity of your spray tan.

  5. Remove all make up and deodorant before your spray tan.  We have exfoliating wipes available to purchase at the salon for $1.00.

  6. Wear loose fitting, dark clothing and flip flops to your appointment.  NO LEGGINGS or TIGHT JEANS please. Flip flops are also available to purchase for $8.00.

  7. Have your manicure and pedicure done BEFORE your spray tan.

  8. Any waxing or other skin treatments should be done at least 48 hours prior to your spray tan.

How Do I Maintain My Spray Tan?

  1. Do not get wet or sweat until after your first shower.

  2. Avoid any lotion, or any other body products until after your first shower, these can stop the DHA from fully developing.

  3. Carefully wash your hands and wrist area 1-4 hours after your appointment.  The drier your hands, the sooner you need to rinse them.  Be sure to not let the water run down your arm.

  4. Wait at least 12 hours after your spray tan to shower.  Keeping the solution on longer than 12 hours will NOT hurt your spray tan, although we recommend washing it off within 24 hours.

  5. During your first shower, make sure you completely rinse all bronzers off your skin and avoid using soap/body wash if possible.

  6. After your spray tan, avoid anti acne and alcohol based products, as well as products that contain parabens, sulfate, mineral oil, fragrance and dyes (Dove products, Bath & Body Works, Baby Oil, etc.)  These will strip your spray tan.  We recommend using products specifically made for spray tans, which can be purchased at The Spray Tan Bar.

  7. Stay as moisturized as possible after you take your first shower.  Staying moisturized will increase the life of the tan as well as help it to fade evenly.

  8. At the end of the life of your spray tan, use an exfoliator and exfoliating gloves to remove any access spray tan from your skin.  A hot bath and baking soda or baby oil can help with this process. NEVER layer a spray tan, this will cause continued build up and alter the outcome of your spray tan.  Make sure your spray tan is completely removed from your skin, before coming back in to see us.

  9. Avoid chlorinated jacuzzis, pools, saunas, and steam rooms.

  10. Don't forget, spray tan solutions DO NOT contain SPF, so don't forget your sunscreen! Stay away from aerosol sunscreen.
